Focus on the Self-Skills

Group experience provides children ages 6-12 years an opportunity Explore, Discover, and Grow in a nurturing environment that will gently challenge them to stretch their Zone of Comfort. Group experience focuses on the Self Skills: Self-monitoring; self-evaluation; self-reinforcement; and self-compassion. These self-skills form the foundation of kids’ ability to navigate strong emotion in healthy ways. Children struggling with Attention, Energy, Impulsivity, Anxiousness, Anger, Relationships, and Defiance will benefit from a group experience.  Children will participate in a variety of activities designed to introduce and reinforce the self-skills through Experience and Action.

What You Should Know about Group Therapy

Parents should check this page for updates regarding weather-related changes or cancelations. Please make sure your child arrives dressed in comfortable clothing that is appropriate for the weather. Synthetic materials are preferred (e.g., polyester, nylon, or wool blend moisture-wicking material). Cotton materials should be avoided whenever possible. Children should wear comfortable shoes that provide adequate ankle support. Please pack your child’s rescue inhaler (e.g., albuterol, levalbuterol, metaproterenol sulfate, pirbuterol, terbutaline, etc.) if it is required for the treatment of asthma symptoms. Please inform your child’s therapist about allergies to any stinging insects (e.g., bee, wasp, etc.). Please pack your child’s epinephrine auto-injector or EpiPen® if it is needed for the treatment of allergic reaction or anaphylaxis. To reduce the likelihood of rash from poison ivy, oak, or sumac, children should wash with cool water and parents should launder their child[ren]’s clothing following participation. Parents can use Tecnu® Original/Extreme Outdoor Skin Cleanser on children’s itchy spots or areas that may have been exposed to urushiol (the oil that causes rash from poison ivy, oak, and sumac). Parents should thoroughly check their child[ren] for tics. A sunscreen product and insect repellent (minimum 25% DEET) should be used as appropriate. A well supplied first aid kit will be available during group activities. Facilitators will provide basic first aid for minor medical conditions including cuts, scrapes, and abrasions. Children participating in the DISCOVERY Kids Group should bring a wide-mouth water bottle (e.g., Nalgene® or equivalent) and pack a sack lunch that includes drinks and snacks.
